Attendance Policy

Attendance

To maximize learning opportunities and ensure future success, students must form responsible habits regarding attendance and punctuality. Parents/guardians are expected to support their student’s attendance by having their children arrive on time, remain in school for a full day, scheduling appointments after school hours, and honoring the academic year calendar by scheduling trips when school is not in session.

CSW Attendance Policy

A student must be in school by 11:00 a.m. or be present from 7:25 a.m. until 11 a.m. to be considered present for the day. Absences include both excused and unexcused absences. As one of the qualifications for promotion, credit for course work, and eligibility for graduation, a student shall not exceed 25 days absent during the school year.

Absences

Unless an absence is pre-approved or caused by a school function, any student not present will be marked as absent unexcused. If the parent/guardian produces a note with a valid reason for the absence (see below), the absence will be coded as excused.

Excused Absence: An excused absence is for one of the reasons listed below and for which the required parent/guardian or professional note of explanation has been provided. A student’s absence will be marked as unexcused in the Student Information System until the note is provided to the Attendance Officer.

Parents/guardians and students shall submit the required excuse note to the Attendance Officer within three (3) school days of the absence (you can submit by email @ attendance@charterschool.org). If written verification of the reason for absence is not received within three (3) school days of the absence, the absence will be counted towards the calculation of unexcused absences for purposes of reporting truancy.

A student absence is considered excused for the following reasons:

  • Student illness (a physician’s note is required after 3 consecutive days)

  • Medical appointments

  • Death in the immediate family/funeral

  • Legal business supported by court document

  • Observance of religious holiday upon parent/guardian request

  • Authorized school-sponsored activity

  • Family emergency as determined by an administrator

  • Pre-approved absence for educational purposes including college visits, not to exceed 5 school days (Absence for Educational Purpose Form must be submitted 14 days in advance)

*Family vacations during school days are considered as unexcused absences.

Note:  If your child has a chronic health condition that may impact attendance, please provide documentation from the health care provider to the school nurse.

State law provides that a student reaches legal majority at age 18, however, attendance notes, and other matters pertaining to school activities, must be signed by a parent/guardian unless the student is living on their own. Proof of residence must be provided.
