Ryan Robinson

For Ryan Robinson, success has never been about following a predetermined path. Instead, it has been built through hard work, calculated risks, and a commitment to continually challenging conventional thinking. A CSW graduate, Ryan has gone on to become a nationally recognized healthcare entrepreneur, author, speaker, and leader, overseeing 31 dental practices through Freedom Dental Health while helping shape a new approach to patient-centered healthcare.

Looking back, Ryan credits CSW with providing the academic foundation and mindset that prepared him for the challenges that followed. While he was often known more for his athletic achievements than his academic standing, the school's rigorous environment taught him discipline, accountability, and how to compete beyond the playing field. "CSW taught me how to work hard even when I wasn't naturally the smartest person in the room," Ryan said. "The school pushed me to think critically, communicate effectively, and challenge myself. It gave me confidence that I could succeed in demanding environments."

After graduating from CSW, Ryan attended the University of Delaware, where he studied Exercise Science. His interests in sports, recovery, performance, and the human body naturally drew him toward healthcare. However, as he explored career options, he discovered dentistry offered a unique combination of science, problem-solving, patient relationships, leadership, and entrepreneurship. "Dentistry gave me the opportunity to combine healthcare with leadership, creativity, and entrepreneurship," Ryan explained. "I loved the idea that I could create my own culture, build my own team, and shape my own vision instead of simply fitting into someone else's structure." That entrepreneurial drive was rooted in his upbringing. Growing up in a blue-collar family, Ryan witnessed firsthand how hard people worked, often with little control over their future or schedules. Those experiences fueled a desire to one day build something of his own.

After earning his degree from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and completing his residency at Christiana Care Health System, Ryan made a decision that many would consider risky: he purchased a dental practice early in his career. Looking back, he acknowledges the leap required both confidence and faith. "I've always believed that sometimes you have to bet on yourself before the world is ready to bet on you," he said. "Sports taught me that. CSW reinforced that mindset academically." That willingness to take risks paid off. Today, Ryan leads Freedom Dental Health, an organization that has grown to include 31 dental practices. As the company expanded, however, his understanding of leadership evolved. "As a younger dentist, I probably focused too much on individual achievement, growth, production, and competition," he said. "Over time, I realized that culture, relationships, leadership, and empowering others are what truly create long-term success."

Ryan believes one of the most important lessons he's learned is that success is ultimately about people. Building a strong team, fostering trust, and creating a culture where individuals can thrive has become central to his leadership philosophy. He also emphasizes the importance of humility, collaboration, and surrounding yourself with people who possess strengths different from your own. Many of those lessons originated in athletics. Sports taught Ryan discipline, resilience, teamwork, accountability, and how to respond under pressure. More importantly, they taught him that great teams succeed not because of individual talent alone, but because people believe in a shared mission. "Leadership isn't about demanding respect," he said. "It's about earning trust through consistency, work ethic, and showing up for people every day."

While Ryan built a successful career in dentistry, his professional mission eventually expanded far beyond traditional dental care. Inspired by his son Bryce's struggles with severe breathing and airway issues, Ryan began exploring the connections between breathing, sleep, jaw development, chronic pain, and overall health. Watching his son struggle changed the direction of his career. Determined to find answers, Ryan immersed himself in airway-centered healthcare, pursued advanced training in craniofacial pain and dental sleep medicine, and began developing a more comprehensive approach to patient care. That journey ultimately led him to write The Root Cause, a book exploring how airway dysfunction and breathing disorders impact both physical and mental health. Through his research and clinical experience, Ryan became increasingly convinced that many chronic health conditions stem from underlying issues that traditional healthcare models often overlook. "What inspired me most was realizing how many patients had underlying root-cause issues that were being missed," he said.

Ryan later shared his broader professional journey in his second book, Bridging Smiles: The Evolution of a Small-Town Dentist to Healthcare Renegade. In it, he reflects on growth, reinvention, resilience, and the courage required to challenge conventional systems and pursue meaningful work. At the center of both books is a message that resonates strongly with his own story: success alone is not enough. True fulfillment comes from connecting your work to a larger purpose and using your talents to positively impact others.

For current CSW students considering careers in healthcare, entrepreneurship, leadership, or any other field, Ryan's advice is simple. "Don't underestimate where you come from," he said. "You do not need to have the perfect background, the highest grades, or the clearest path to build an impactful life." He encourages students to embrace challenges, remain curious, ask questions, and be willing to think differently. Most importantly, he believes they should trust themselves enough to take chances when opportunities arise. "Bet on yourself," Ryan said. "The world will always give you reasons to play small or stay comfortable. Don't be afraid to take risks, dream bigger than your environment, and build something meaningful that positively impacts other people."

From student-athlete at CSW to healthcare innovator, entrepreneur, author, and leader, Ryan Robinson's story demonstrates how discipline, vision, and a willingness to challenge the status quo can create opportunities far beyond what may seem possible at the start of the journey.
