This summer, the mathematics department is piloting a new program whereby you can qualify to take AP Calculus AB in the coming school year. Qualification will be decided by a comprehensive Math 3/ Precalculus challenge examination given in August. Preparation for this exam is in your hands.
The registration for the course is based on exemplary performance in Integrated Mathematics 2 Phase 5 or Integrated Mathematics 3 Phase 4 and their teacher's recommendation.
Here are the details of this program:
- If you decide to accept this opportunity, contact Mr. Satalino in writing to state your intention by May 23rd (email: ssatalino@charterschool.org). Be sure that he has your email address for notification purposes and/or to communicate any other information.
- The topics you must master are contained in the course outline for Integrated Math 3, available at http://www.charterschool.org/downloads/courseOutlines/mathematics/MathIII.pdf.
- You may prepare for the exam in any manner you prefer. Some choices are:
- Borrow a Math 3 or Precalculus textbook from Mr. Satalino in Room 308, leaving a deposit check in the amount of $70.00, for each book, payable to CSW. (Sometime during Final Exam week.) Note that there are topics in the Math 3 course outline that are not included in the Math 3 text.
- Attend a Precalculus class at the educational institution of your choice.
- Hire an independent tutor.
- Work with a friend or relative.
- Study on the Internet.
- Since summer courses are completed by the end of July, the challenge exam will be given on Monday, August 25th, 9 - 11 AM. Report to the Main Office for the room assignment.
- The exam has two parts: one without a calculator, and one with.
- You must supply your own calculator for the exam.
- The minimum acceptable score is 85%.
- You will be notified of the results via email.
- If you cannot attend on 8/25 you must schedule a make-up time with Mr. Satalino.
- After receiving an appropriate grade on the exam, Mr. Satalino will change your schedule to include AP Calculus AB.
If you or your parents have any questions, please contact Mr. Satalino at x308 (ssatalino@charterschool.org) or Mr. Biehl at x304 (cbiehl@charterschool.org). Once again, congratulations for qualifying for this opportunity.
