Spanish Course Offerings
5105, 5104, 5103 Spanish I (1 credit)
Audio-visual and print media enhance the learning of five language skills: listening, writing, reading,
speaking, and cultural awareness. Topics studied include telling time, introductions, descriptions, making
plans, and activities.
Prerequisites: none
5205, 5204, 5203 Spanish II (1 credit)
Students build on concepts learned in Spanish I. Spanish II focuses on more advanced grammatical
structures and students work toward proficiency in the contextual context. Video and cassette programs
complement coursework.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish I
5305, 5304 Spanish III (1 credit)
Students continue to practice grammar structures as well as learning new grammatical structures.
Students practice reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills using authentic Spanish literature. Students
are encouraged to express themselves orally and in writing.
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Spanish I and II with a grade of C or better or teacher approval.
5405 Spanish Conversation and Culture (1 credit)
This course provides an option to students who successfully completed Spanish IV and do not wish to
take AP at this time. Spanish conversation is explored at an advanced level in order to challenge and improve
each student’s conversational skills, both listening and speaking. The class is structured around discussion of
current events, newspaper articles, television, and movies. Students also take a look at Spanish idioms and
colloquial expressions.
Prerequisite: grade of B or better in Spanish IV or teacher approval.
5505, 5504, Spanish IV (1 credit)
Students continue the development of the four language skills, while learning Hispanic culture through
the exposure to works by modern writers of the Spanish-speaking world. The units include art, humor, history,
and many literary genres such as short stories, poems, songs, novels, and plays.
Prerequisite: grade of C or better in Spanish III or teacher approval.
5506 AP Spanish Language (1 credit)
This course is grammar-intensive with students working toward developing high levels of proficiency
in the four language skills: writing, reading, listening, and speaking. Students enrolled in this course are
required to take the Advanced Placement Exam.
Prerequisites: grade of B or better in Spanish IV and teacher approval
