This introduction to the French language focuses on communication, competency, culture, and
cooperative learning. The four basic language skills are stressed: speaking, writing, listening, and reading.
Video and cassette programs complement the instruction.

5215, 5214, 5213 French II (1 credit)
Building on previous skills, French II students focus more on advanced grammatical structures and
work toward proficiency in basic conversational context. Video and cassette programs complement coursework.
Prerequisite: grade of C or better in French I or teacher approval
5315, 5314, 5313 French III (1 credit)
In addition to continuing to hone grammar skills, French III introduces students to French literature
and develops written and oral proficiency.
Prerequisite: successful completion of French II
5415, 5414, 5413 French IV (1 credit)
Students continue their study of French literature and apply grammatical skills through the written and
oral discussion of related themes.
Prerequisite: grade of C or better in French III or teacher approval
5516 AP French Language (1 credit)
This Advanced Placement course is grammar-intensive. Students work toward developing high levels
of proficiency in the four language skills: speaking, writing, reading, and listening comprehension.
Prerequisites: grade of B or better in French IV and teacher approval
5536 Advanced Placement French Literature (1 credit)
Students are prepared for the AP test by gaining proficiency in language skills which enable them to
read and understand prose and verse of moderate difficulty, formulate and express critical opinions in both
written and oral form, and develop the ability to read, analyze, and discuss critically representative works of
French Literature.
Prerequisite: AP French Language (5516) or teacher approval
