2007-08 Schedule
September
- 15 - Bryon, Henry, Neeraj, and Raja go to the Mid-Atlantic Opener, a tournament held at Paint Branch in the It's Academic format. Going 4-2 in the prelims, they advanced to the playoffs as the 5 seed, defeated Walter Johnson in the Quarters, and lost to Richard Montgomery in the Semis. They finished 3rd overall out of 24 teams with a final win over Georgetown Day School.
October
- 13 - 7 teams traveled to Thomas Jefferson in Alexandria, Virginia:
- Billy, Crabby, P.C., and Rui finished 1-4, their 245-point win coming over Langley A
- Lizzy, Megan S., Pavitra, and Stephen went 2-3, with later wins over Edison A and Centennial B.
- Charlie, Christine, Lisa, and Kevin went 2-3, including a 245-point win over St. Anne's. Christine scored over 40 points per 20 tossups.
- Ben, David H., John, and Meg had two early wins over Elizabeth Seton and Maggie Walker C. Unfortunately that earned them a harder schedule and they finished the day at 2-3.
- Brianna, David, Jimmy, and Raj had two early wins over Langley B and St. Stephens. They too garnered a tough schedule and finished at 2-3.
- Chris, Erik, Jack, and Nick had a great run, losing to only Whitman A in the prelims. Their efforts earned them a berth in the round of 16, which regrettably was against Charter A.
- Byron, Henry, Neeraj, and Raja went 4-1 in the prelims with a loss to Richard Montgomery A. They defeated Charter B and Whitman A before losing to Stuyvesant in the semis. They secured 3rd place out of 51 teams with a big victory over Hunter where Hunter wasn't even on the board until tossup sixteen.
- 20 - Princeton University. We had a very good tournament. Team D went 4-3 and just missed the playoffs. Teams B (5-2), C (5-2), and E (6-1) all made the octofinals. Team A (7-0) made it to the semifinals and finished 4th overall. That's four more trophies for the case.
- 26-27: In previous years, we had done the Long Island Fall Tournament (LIFT) as a one day trip. Usually, we would get tired by the end of the day and drop rounds that we should have won. This year, 32 students stayed overnight in Hicksville and the results show that we had one of our best days ever. This was also the first time that "Charter H" competed.
- Charles, Pavitra, Pradiyoth, ahd Raj went 3-4, and earned a win over Ursuline A. They were 43rd overall.
- Kevin, Ponni, Rose, and Stephen went 3-4, including a 325-140 win over Valley Stream A. They lost a round to Saint Peter's by five points, and just missed the cut at 35th overall.
- Brianna, David W, Jimmy, and Lizzy went 4-3 in the prelims. After losing to Seton Hall in the first playoff, they won against Smithtown East to finish 23rd overall.
- Billy, Lisa, Megan, and Philip went 6-1. Unfortunately that earned them a first round against Charter B. But they won against Ward Melville B for 17th overall.
- Chris, Erik, Jack, and Nick went 6-1. After beating Charter E, they lost to Charter A (an unfortunate playoff spot). They dropped a close consolation for 16th overall.
- Byron, Christine, Crabby, and Jeff went 6-1. They beat Ward Melville A by 330 points, but then lost to Stuyvesant A. Then they lost to Charter C for 13th overall.
- Ben, David H, John, and Meg went 7-0. This included a win over Georgetown Day. They defeated Moravian B in the round 32, but then Georgetown got their revenge. They then played Charter D and finished 9th overall.
- Henry, Neeraj, Raja, and Rui went 7-0 and were seeded first. Their playoff run:
- Round of 32: Ward Melville B 695 to -5
- Octos: Charter B 470 to 190
- Quarters: Half Hollows Hills West A 525 to 170
- Semis: Georgetown Day 425 to 260
- Final: Moravian A 350 to 330
November
- 10 - Two Charter teams participated in TRASH regionals held at the University of Delaware. Both teams earned a pair of wins.
December
- 1 - Why settle for playing high schools when you're good enough to beat some college teams too? Henry, Mister T, Neeraj, P.C., Raja, and Rui, with help from Dan Goff, finished 1st at Maryland 11. But it was a tie: the University of Delaware Team also had 22 total points. Our co-champions included our alums Chris, Claire, Greg, Mark, and Rob.
- 8 - Delaware Fall Open at Charter. Two of our JV teams made the playoffs, and we got 2nd place.
January
- 12 - 5 teams traveled to Thomas Jefferson's Housh Classic. Four of the teams made the round of 32. Team B defeated Team D in that round to advanced to the octos. Team A made it to the finals and finished 2nd, going 10-2 on the day, with both losses coming from Walt Whitman. The highlight of the day was when Charter D upset 4th place Hunter for one of its two prelims losses, and Charter A delivered the other.
- 19 - Charter hosts Charter Challenge IV for Middle School teams. Trophies were won by Brookside, Newark Charter, McVey, and Shue-Medill.
- 26 - Charter took 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and one of the fifth place spots at the NAQT State Championship, held at Ursuline.
February
- 9 - Last year we took the scenic route on this day, as an early loss caused a trip through the losers bracket of the Comcast prelims. This year it was a more direct route:
- Charter 495 Mount Pleasant 105
- Charter 585 Delmar 40
- Charter 370 Salesianum 105
- Charter 440 Mount Pleasant 145
- 23 - We won our sixth consecutive title at the Comcast Academic Challenge. The three televised matches were Charter 410-Mount Pleasant 220, Charter 390-Sanford 225, and Charter 340-Mount Pleasant 195.
- 23 - Juniors went to Conestoga Valley in Lancaster, Pa. One of the teams made the round of 16, and the other finished 18th out of over 50 teams.
March
- 1 - The somewhat new Temple University team hosted THS 1138, named after George Lucas' first feature film. We were able to use a SEPTA train to get the tournament, which was a new mode of transportation for us. We were five of the twelve teams in a very high power field.
- Billy, Charles, Ryan, Sid, and Stephen went 2-9, with wins over Moravian B and MAST.
- Brianna, Jimmy, Lizzy, and Phil went 4-7, including wins over Moravian B and Bergen B.
- Crabby, Jeff, Nate, and Rui went 4-7. Rui was 8th individually and Crabby was 9th.
- Chris, David, John, and Meg went 8-3 which tied them for 3rd. This included an impressive win over Moravian. David was 6th individually.
- Byron, Henry, Neeraj, and Raja went 10-1. Henry was 3rd individually and Raja was 10th. Against MAST, they had a round where they converted all twenty tossups. They went into the final against Hunter and had to win two rounds to capture the title. This was accomplished 290-240, 400-275.
- 8 - Henry won a third Blue Hen title, with Raja, Neeraj, and Rui as teammates. Charter had 4 teams in the playoffs and 3 teams make the quarterfinals.
- 15-16 - The "A" team went to the weekend of quizbowl goodness at George Mason University. On Saturday the team finished 4th in a very competative field. On Sunday, NAQT Sectionals questions were used, and the team finished first, only losing one round in the prelims.
April
- 11-12 - Charter B (Christine, Crabby, and Erik) won the State College Academic Tournament in State College Pennsylvania, defeating Shady Side in the final. Charter D (Chris, John, and P.C.) finished 4th and Charter C (Ben, Nate, Nick) finished 5th out of 15 teams.
- 12 - In the meantime, Charter A (Henry, Neeraj, Jeff, and guest star Charles) went to the Maryland Spring Classic. A successful day included an 8-1 record and a 2nd place finish. Thus, we were one win away from the holy grail of a simultaneous double tournament win.
