Charter Challenge

Invitation for January 2010

Dear Middle School Academic teams:

Charter Academic Bowl is pleased to invite all students in grades 5-8 to:

Charter Challenge VI
Where the Buzzing Things Are

A quiz tournament to be held on Saturday, January 9th, 2010.

Questions will span all categories, including:

Science Mathematics Literature History
Geography Vocabulary The Arts World Languages
Music Pop Culture Sports General Knowledge

Teams consist of up to 4 students playing at a time, with substitutions allowed. Tossup questions will make use of electronic buzzer systems. Teams will work together on bonus categories. All teams will be guaranteed at least 3 matches, and will hopefully play more.

This tournament features four groups of competition. Pending an adequate number of teams, there will be separate brackets for grades 5, 6, 7, and 8.

In the case where a student wants to participate without the support of his or her own school, teams are allowed to mix students from different schools. Teams may also mix students from different grade, but must play in the bracket of the oldest student.

Schedule:

  • 8:15-9:00 Registration and setup (ground floor cafeteria)
  • 9:00-9:30 Welcome, Announcements, Rules Discussion
  • 9:30-12:30 Preliminary Rounds
  • 11:30-1:00 Lunch
  • 1:00-5:00 Preliminary Rounds and Playoff Rounds

Pizza, chips, soda, and candy will be available for purchase at lunch.

We need buzzers to make the tournament happen. If your school has a buzzer system please bring it.

Even if your school does not regularly compete in quiz competitions, students in your science or math team may enjoy this contest. Information and practice questions are available on our website.

To register, send an email to charterquiz@gmail.com listing the school or team name, the number of teams (specify a grade for each), and the number of buzzer systems that you will be bringing (if any). You must register ahead of time so that we include your team(s) on the schedule. We will reserve the right to limit the number of teams each school brings if the tournament reaches capacity, and to deny any attempted registrations after Wednesday, January 5th.

Best of luck,

The Students of Charter Academic Bowl and
Bill Tressler (coach)

Directions to The Charter School of Wilmington:

Charter is located on Delaware route 48 in "Wilmington High School" which contains Charter and Cab Calloway. The address is 100 North DuPont Road.

Coming from Kirkwood highway (route 2): you should turn left when it meets 48. There are two cemeteries on the left, the school is then on the right. Turn right at the light where the school is and parking is behind the building.

From I-95 / I-495 / I-295, take Exit 5B (Route 141 North - Newport). Around 5 miles 141 will meet route 48. Turn right and proceed 1-2 miles, past Conway Plaza. The school will be on the left.

From Southern Delaware using Route 1, Route 1 will merge and turn into Route 7 near Christiana. Continue on Route 7 until Route 2 / Kirkwood Highway. Head east on Route 2 until it meets route 48 and proceed as above.

If you are lost or late on the morning of the tournament, call (302) 651-2727 extension 307. Hopefully the phone will ring in my classroom. If you are instead sent to my voicemail, leave a number and we will call you back.
