The "Card" System

This system is inspired by the one in use at NAQT nationals beginning with June 2003. However, one criticism of NAQT's system is that an early loss allows a team to play "easier" teams for the next several rounds. In my tables, that is eliminated because teams that go "win, loss" play teams that go "loss, win". Thus, there is no incentive to throw an early round.

Unless you have exactly a power of two number of teams, some of the matches will be "one off" (for examaple, a 2-2 team may have to play a team with a 3-1 or 1-3 record in a small number of rooms). Also, in the last few rounds there is a chance of a repeat match. These matches are marked and a suggested fix is usually provided.

  1. Drop the table into a spreadsheet and assign each row a room number.
  2. Assign each team a number. You could do this randomly, but the downside is that teams from the same school may play each other right away. Alternatively, when a school sends 2 teams, put one in the top half of the numbers and one in the bottom half. If a school send 4 teams, put one team in each quarter of the numbers.
  3. During each match, the winning team takes the card closer to 1. The losing team takes the card closer to N (where N is the number of teams you have).
  4. Then and only then do they look to see where to go for the next round.

Round Robins

There exist a number of round robin good schedules on the web.

This table is very well done. Click on the number of teams that you have, and choose "balanced" and "table" at the top. (The balance is that each team appears in each room as equal as possible.) I dare you to have a 200-team round robin tournament.
